7th Annual iStar Charity Shootout

Celebrities and Corporate Sponsors Took Shots for Charity to benefit Baby Buggy(r), Human Rights First, Robin Hood and Teach For America

Even a recession couldn't keep sports stars, celebrities and entertainers from joining influential business leaders and children of all ages in a friendly basketball competition at the 7th Annual iStar Charity Shootout http://istarcharityfoundation.org at Madison Square Garden on Monday, July 20, 2009. The event attracted approximately 1,200 attendees and raised over $350,000 for children's education and human rights organizations.

Keeping with tradition, this year's event featured athletes, entertainers and prominent business leaders participating in various basketball competitions designed to raise money for the four charities. Highlights of the evening included big money-making "Supershots" by supermodel, Emme, for $40,000 and New York Knicks number-one draft pick, Danilo Gallinari, connecting on a shot worth $26,000. Also at the event, actor Hugh Jackman and actress Vivica A. Fox joined Gallinari and his teammate Wilson Chandler and former Knicks stars Anthony Mason and Charles Smith, as well as former NY Liberty women's star Kym Hampton and super middleweight boxing contender, Michael, Olajide as guest judges for the slam dunk competition.

The evening also featured performances by the Harlem Wizards, Knicks City Kids, "Maddie" the Mascot and a special halftime performance by beatboxers Kid Lucky, Shockwave of PBS TV's re-tooled classic "The Electric Company(r)", Butterscotch, an "America's Got Talent" finalist and Swiss Chris. WNBC-TV sports anchor, Bruce Beck, once again served as master of ceremonies.

What was different this year?

"Understanding the economic environment, we deemphasized our focus on monetary donations," said Jay Sugarman, chairman and chief executive officer of iStar Financial and event founder. "The event's real goal this year was to raise awareness of its worthy beneficiaries. We were overjoyed with the attendance and loud crowd that helped us make this year's event extra fun and special. We truly lived up to the tagline, get on the court and change the game."

iStar Financial, the Jay & Kelly Sugarman Foundation and Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, the event underwriters, are dedicated to actively broadening awareness and increasing charitable contributions for existing non-profit organizations including the evening's beneficiaries: Baby Buggy, Human Rights First, Robin Hood and Teach For America.

About the Charities

Four charities benefitted from this year's iStar Charity Shootout:
* Baby Buggy(r) http://www.babybuggy.org Founded in 2001 by Jessica Seinfeld, Baby Buggy is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing essential equipment, clothing and products for infants and young children to New York City families in need. With an extensive network of community based organizations in the five boroughs, Baby Buggy has delivered over 3.7 million essential items to tens of thousands of children.

* Human Rights First http://www.humanrightsfirst.org is a non-profit, nonpartisan international human rights organization based in New York and Washington, DC, that protects people at risk: refugees who flee persecution, victims of crimes against humanity or other mass human rights violations, victims of discrimination, those whose rights are eroded in the name of national security, and human rights advocates who are targeted for defending the rights of others.

* Robin Hood http://www.robinhood.org holds steadfast to a single mission: fight poverty in New York City. We believe in reducing poverty for today's generation and preventing poverty for generations to come. Robin Hood finds, funds and partners with over 200 of the most effective schools and programs in the city's poorest neighborhoods to save the lives and change the fates of those who battle educational failure, joblessness, teen pregnancy, abuse, AIDS, hunger and homelessness. We then provide management assistance and support services to make them even stronger. When we see unmet needs, we launch initiatives to address them. Robin Hood's board of directors pays all administrative, fundraising and evaluation costs. That means 100 percent of donations goes directly to organizations serving families who struggle against poverty.

* Teach For America http://www.teachforamerica.org is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates who commit to teach for at least two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. This fall, 7,300 corps members will be teaching in 35 regions across the country while 17,000 Teach For America alumni continue working from inside and outside the field of education for the fundamental changes necessary to ensure educational excellence and equity.
