On Thursday, Dec. 4th, 2008 Antiques & Art at the Armory, the inaugural show for AVENUE-Wendy Shows, hosted a Gala Benefit for the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity, founded by Dr. Sally Shaywitz and Dr. Bennett Shaywitz.

The evening, which began with the unveiling of a special gallery installation at 5pm, followed by a cocktail reception from 6-8pm, raised significant funds for the newly opened research center and showcased the diverse collections from over 70 dealers featured in Antiques & Arts at the Armory.

Committee co-chairs for the benefit were Claude Wasserstein, Julie Dannenberg, Richard & Marcia Mishaan and Sally Shaywitz, MD, who kicked off the evening with an unveiling of 30 Years of AVENUE Icons, a special gallery installation featuring the images of some of NYC’s most powerful as they have appeared in AVENUE Magazine, including Martha Stewart, Marc Jacobs, Isaac Mizrahi, Donald Trump, Georgina Chapman, Jann Wenner, Amy Sacco and Richard Johnson.

The celebration continued until after 8pm as guests including Jackie Astier, Elbi Askins Balan, Dennis Basso, Anait Bian, Janna Bullock, Tory Burch, Wendy Carduner, Georgina Chapman, Jodie and Diane Fanelli, Somers and Jonathan Farkas, Fe and Alessandro Fendi, Mark Gilbertson, Frances Hayward, Harry Heissmann, Harriette Rose Katz, Lisa Jackson, Michele Gerber Klein, Rona Landman, Liz Lange, Bentley Meeker, Nicole Miller, Gigi Mortimer, Patti Smyth, Gillian and Sylvester Miniter, Audrey and Albert Ratner, Patti Raynes, Shlomi Reuveni, Sessa von Richthofen, Elaine Sargent, Alvin Valley and Jeani Ziering, mingled over cocktails and perused the booths of over 70 dealers specializing in high quality art and antiques ranging from the 17th century until present day, including AJ Gallery, Callan Fine Art, Drucker Antiques, Fleur, Damiani, Guy Regal LTD, Derek & Tina Rayment Antiques, Lee Gallery Inc. Studio and Richard Mishaan Design Design/Homer.

The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity leverages the power and authority of modern science to transform dyslexia from a liability to an asset so that strengths rather than weaknesses define the dyslexic child. The Center’s mission includes changing attitudes and policies along with approaches to identification, remediation and accommodations for dyslexia.
