National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health 15th Anniversary Quince

The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) was founded in 1994, in direct response to the lack of Latina visibility on reproductive rights and health issues.

The mission of NLIRH is to ensure the fundamental human right to reproductive health and justice for Latinas, their families and their communities through public education, community mobilization and policy advocacy. For 15 years, NLIRH has been building the necessary momentum that will ensure strong families, healthy communities, and better economic opportunities for Latinas. To this day, NLIRH is the only national Latina health and reproductive rights organization representing an increasingly diverse and growing Latina population.

On October 7, 2009, almost 200 advocates and supporters came together at the beautiful National Museum of Women in the Arts celebrate our 15th Anniversary. Maria Hinojosa, host of the popular NPR show Latino USA, was our Mistress of Ceremonies. At the event, we recognized three agents of social change who are making the world a better place for Latinas, their families, and their communities: VOTO LATINO received our Justicia award because their unrelenting efforts in registering more than 35,000 new voters in 2008's historical presidential election showed America how powerful Latin@s are when we mobilize our communities; MARÍA LUISA SÁNCHEZ FUENTES, the Executive Director of GIRE, who led the successful campaign to decriminalize abortion in Mexico City, received our Dignidad award; and GLORIA MORENO, a Promotora de Salud and a leader in the Texas Latina Advocacy Network received our Salud award because her groundbreaking local work to connect community organizing around health care reform and reproductive justice is actually affecting change nationwide.

The event’s Host Committee included Congress Members Nydia Velasquez, Loretta Sanchez and Raul Grijalva as co-chairs. The evening’s entertainment was provided by the world-renowned Masacote Salsa Dance Company and the Washington DC-area's longest existing mariachi ensemble, Mariachi Los Amigos. Our Quince also featured delicious Latin food provided by two Washington, DC-area Latin restaurants - Café Atlantico and Oyamel - who showcased some of their signature dishes. Finally, our silent auction – which attendees are still raving about! – included exciting items, such as vacation and pleasure packages, designer merchandise, literary gems, and tickets to see sporting events.
