Spirit of Helen Keller Gala
05/28/2009 - By 583 Park Avenue in New York

Spirit of Helen Keller Gala

On May 28, 2009, HKI hosted its fourth annual Spirit of Helen Keller Gala at 583 Park Avenue in New York.

The event raised over $700,000 to benefit HKI's sight and life saving programs in 22 Asian and African countries and in the United States.

Nearly 300 guests gathered together to celebrate the critical work HKI does each year and to recognize three outstanding individuals and institutions who have lent their voice and might to the fight against needless blindness and malnutrition.

This year's Spirit of Helen Keller Award was presented to David Green, a MacArthur Fellow, an Ashoka Fellow, and a leading social entrepreneur. Dr. Green spoke eloquently about how past Spirit of Helen Keller awardees have inspired him to create affordable, sustainable and equitable eye-care in developing countries. His quest to make health care products and services available and affordable to the poor has helped create numerous eye hospitals, and he played a critical role in developing the first non-profit manufacturing facility in a developing country, Aurolab (India).

Brian D. Perkins, Corporate Vice President, Corporate Affairs, accepted The Helen Keller Humanitarian Award on behalf of Johnson & Johnson. J&J was presented this honor in recognition of their sustained humanitarian efforts around the world and their outstanding leadership in improving global health, notably their Children Without Worms initiative. This program treats 25 million children who suffer from intestinal worms in high-risk areas around the world. The company provides its de-worming drug, mebendazole, and works with partners to develop hygiene education programs and improved sanitation facilities to stop the cycle of perpetual infections. J&J and HKI have collaborated since 1993, partnering both on a global scale and on the local level through HKI's ChildSight(r) program in New Jersey.

The final award of the evening, The Helen Keller Legacy Award, went to Christie's Inc. in recognition of its generosity and support of HKI for over a decade. Christopher Burge, Honorary Chairman of Christie's Inc., and a former HKI board trustee, accepted on behalf of the auction house. Burge remarked on the seemingly anomalous connection between the eye and the arts, and spoke eloquently about how those who are privileged to, "collect works of art, and who enjoy these visual feasts, [should] give every year to HKI to help those millions around the world for whom a visual feast would be simply to see anything."

The event ended with a lively live auction conducted by Mr. Burge, which raised an impressive $150,000 for HKI's programs.
