Mr. Hübbe is an internationally-acclaimed ballet dancer, teacher, and ballet master. Born and raised in Copenhagen, he began his training with the Royal Danish Ballet at the age of 10, and rose within the ranks of the company to apprentice in 1984, member of the Corps de Ballet in 1986, and Principal Dancer in 1988. In 1992, Mr. Hübbe left Denmark and joined the New York City Ballet as a Principal Dancer. During his tenure with the NYCB, he performed leading roles in many ballets and originated many other roles. During the season of 2007-2008, Mr. Hübbe worked in New York as well as in Copenhagen. As Head Ballet Master to the Royal Danish Ballet, he was “in apprenticeship” for the position as Artistic Director while still being active as principal dancer with the New York City Ballet where he gave his farewell performance in February 2008. On his return to Copenhagen, he performed in his very last role as James in La Sylphide with the Royal Danish Ballet at the company’s headquarters in Copenhagen. Nikolaj Hübbe is currently working as Artistic Director to the Royal Danish Ballet.

The ASF Cultural Award recognizes individuals or organizations whose achievement in the fields of art and culture has significantly furthered understanding between the United States and the Scandinavian countries.

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) promotes international understanding through educational and cultural exchange between the United States and the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. A not-for-profit organization that relies on the generosity of private donors in the U.S. and the Nordic countries, the ASF carries on an extensive program of fellowships, grants, trainee placement, publishing, membership offerings and cultural activities. This past year, the ASF awarded more than $1 million in grants and fellowships to scholars, individual students, artists and professionals.

The ASF established Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America in October 2000. As the leading center of Nordic culture in the U.S., Scandinavia House offers the public a wide range of programs: art and design exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, readings, lectures and symposia. The ASF has associate members and subscribers worldwide. More than 27,000 Scandinavians and Americans have participated in its exchange programs since its founding in 1910.
