The Young Leaders Council of the United Way First Charity 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament

The Young Leaders Council of the United Way of New York City hosted their first charity 3 on 3 basketball tournament in partnership with the Riverside Hawks on March 28th.

Naismith Hall of Famer, Earl the Pearl Monroe, opened the tourney and offered words of encouragement to the basketball players. Over five hours of highly competitive basketball play helped to generate revenue in support of United Way's educational program, Focus Forward, that equips at-risk NYC high school students with skills to graduate on time. Basketball teams represented some of New York City top corporations that included Macy’s and Enterprise Car Service.

Carla Payne, Young Leaders Council Executive Committee Co-chair stated, “this event was a success and we connected with many corporate sponsors that included WBLS 107.5 radio station and the New York Knicks, while engaging with the Harlem community. We look forward to doing this event on an even larger scale next year.”

About Young Leaders Council:
Over 700 NYC driven professionals under 40 years of age are part of The United Way Young Leaders Council (YLC). The Council promotes philanthropy, education, volunteerism and leadership among professionals in NYC. To create lasting change in the lives of our city's most vulnerable residents, the Young Leaders Council develops projects that support and sustain current United Way activities targeting youth in New York City.

We are making an impact on our communities by providing guidance, mentoring and support to at-risk NYC youth to give them a vision for their future. The key is to keep these high school students on track so they can achieve greater life aspirations. We believe in investing in the education of future "young leaders" through preparing them for employment and higher education opportunities after high school. We support United Way's Focus Forward program which targets students most at risk of dropping out, improves their attendance, and motivates them to stay in school through intensive counseling, family involvement and linkages to academic support services.

How is this accomplished
 Provide hands-on learning and mentoring through job-shadow opportunities
 Help students navigate the college application process
 Engage young professionals throughout NYC in raising awareness and funds in support of the Focus Forward program.
