Tickled Pink! A Benefit for the Greater NYC Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

OVER 400 JOIN PROJECT RUNWAY‘S TIM GUNN AND TODAY SHOW’S STACY LONDON AT TICKLED PINK!

Komen Greater NYC Event, Hosted by Teens for the Cure, Reaches Out to Teenaged Girls — Raising Breast Cancer Awareness and Funds

Over 400 people attended Tickled Pink!, a benefit for the Greater NYC Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® aimed primarily toward teenage girls and their mothers, on Friday evening, April 3, 2009 at the Diane von Furstenburg Studio in Manhattan. Nearly $150,000 was raised to support the fight against breast cancer.

This fantastic evening combining fashion, shopping and breast cancer awareness was hosted by the Teens for the Cure®, founded five years ago by breast cancer survivor Iris Dankner and her daughter Nicole (Niki). The event was emceed by WCBS-TV weatherman John Elliott, a masterful emcee who kept the evening moving in the most entertaining way possible. Donny Deutsch, host of CNBC’s The Big Idea and Chairman of Deutsch, Inc., really worked the room as he auctioned off four items, including a guest appearance on NBC’s 30 Rock and a behind-the-scenes tour of Howard Stern’s Sirius radio studio, during the event’s live auction.

This year, Chief Creative Officer of Liz Claiborne, Inc. and Project Runway star Tim Gunn and Today Show style correspondent and TLC’s What Not To Wear co-host Stacy London presided over the evening’s high point — a two-part fashion show of Diane von Furstenberg’s spring-summer 2009 line. The first part featured eight professional models wearing 24 different looks. But the finale and emotional center of the event featured breast cancer survivors and their children and other family members working the runway in high style in DVF’s fashions.

The annual Tickled Pink! event gives teens, their mothers, and all attendees an opportunity to shop, preview the latest fashions from event sponsor Diane von Furstenberg and learn about breast cancer and its issues.

This year, nine mother/daughter teams and two mothers and sons will be part of the runway show, including the Dankners and Geralyn Lucas (author of I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy) and her daughter Skye. “The models symbolize hope, love and family, showing that there is indeed ‘life after breast cancer!’” said Iris Dankner.

Sponsors for Tickled Pink! are as follows: Pink Diamond: Diane von Furstenberg, Seventeen Magazine, Candy for a Cure, and ClearVision Optical Company. Pink Ruby: Hanky Panky. Pink Sapphire: Jill Gerla & David Cohen, Donny Deutsch, and Jessica, Drew and Samantha Guff. Pink Quartz: Anita & Stanley Eisenberg, Joan Hornig Jewelry, Nautica®, Physician's Choice Surgicenter, Barbara & Paul Schorr, and William Greenberg Desserts. Media Sponsors are The Amsterdam News, CBS 2, and the New York Post. Diane von Furstenberg has supported the event since its inception in 2005.

Teens for the Cure offers young women whose mothers have breast cancer a supportive place where they are free to talk, laugh, cry and express their feelings with their peers. It also educates and empowers them, allowing them to pool their talents and make a difference by fighting the disease.

In 2009, Komen Greater NYC is awarding nearly $4 million in grants — $2.7 million to support 40 community-based organizations that provide breast health programs to underserved women and more than $1.3 million for national peer-reviewed research.
