On December 12, more than 150 young philanthropists gathered for United Way of New York City’s Young Leaders Council Second Annual Red Carpet Soiree at the Renaissance Hotel Times Square. The event raised more than $25,000 for United Way of New York City’s Focus Forward initiative—one of the only after-school programs in the City that improves the graduation rate of youth most at risk of dropping out by enabling them to earn additional credits towards diploma requirements.

Guests enjoyed drinks, dancing, a silent auction and spectacular views of Times Square. Macy’s, BET Networks, and IS Vodka served as sponsors, and the after party was hosted at VELOUR.

Fox 5’s Katherine Creag served as emcee, and celebrity DJ Beverly Bond was recognized as the 2009 SPOTLIGHT Young Philanthropist for her charitable work. Focus Forward graduate Stephanie Mejia spoke about how the program helped her re-engage in school, graduate and move on to college.

The Young Leaders Council of United Way of New York City is a group of young professional ages 21–40 who are focused on transforming their community. United Way of New York City (UWNYC) creates, leads and supports strategic initiatives that seek to achieve sustainable citywide improvements in the education, income stability, and health of low-income New Yorkers. UWNYC also seeks to foster a more robust and effective nonprofit sector in New York City.
